Roundies Solid Icons

Solid icons have an inherent advantage over line icons: they're faster to scan. The human eye identifies filled shapes about 20% quicker than outlined ones because silhouette recognition is one of the brain's fastest visual processing pathways. But solid icons have a reputation problem. Most of them look industrial, cold, and interchangeable. Roundies fix that.

What "rounded solid" actually means in practice

Every corner radius in this set follows a consistent formula. External corners use a larger radius. Internal corners use a smaller one. Terminals (the ends of shapes) are rounded, not squared. The result is icons that feel organic and approachable while maintaining the scanability advantage of solid fills. Think of the difference between an iPhone's rounded rectangle and a Windows Phone's sharp corners. Same shape, completely different personality.

The negative space is doing the real work

In solid icon design, the parts you remove matter more than the parts you keep. Roundies use strategic cutouts to create internal detail without relying on color variation or outlines. A folder icon doesn't just show a filled rectangle. The tab, the opening, and the document peeking out are all defined by carefully placed negative space. This technique keeps icons readable at any size because the detail is structural, not decorative.

We tested five solid icon sets for our banking app. Roundies was the only one that didn't make the interface feel heavy and intimidating. The rounded edges and smart negative space made a real difference in user comfort scores.

Technical details for implementation

Each icon is a single compound path in SVG. No groups, no layers, no clipping masks. Just one `` element with a `fill` attribute. This means file sizes are tiny (most under 600 bytes), rendering is fast, and recoloring is a single CSS property change: `fill: var(--icon-color)`. The consistent design language means you can use any 50 icons from this set together and they look like they were commissioned as a custom set.
